8 traps to avoid when buying furniture in Foshan

After walking 3,000+ buyers through these factories, here are the eight traps that cost the most—learn them and skip the tuition.

The eight traps, and how to disarm each

1. The tout. Roadside pullers who walk you into “partner factories” for kickbacks. Disarm: ask whose account the payment goes to.

2. A/B goods. Showroom sample is one version, the delivery another. Disarm: attach the physical photo and model number to the contract, and inspect on video before shipment.

3. The deposit scam. Full payment to a personal WeChat, then they vanish. Disarm: pay to the factory's corporate account, in stages; never transfer full sums to individuals.

4. The fake factory. A “factory direct” sign on a reseller. Disarm: demand the workshop tour—real factories are proud to show production.

5. Faux leather sold as real. Bonded leather and MDF frames. Disarm: check the hide's cross-section pores, smell, and rebound; write “top-grain cowhide” explicitly into the contract.

6. Size fails. Buying before measuring your rooms. Disarm: bring your floor plan and a tape measure; confirm dimensions before ordering.

7. The free guide. No fee, but earns from your price spread. Disarm: only hire fixed-fee, money-never-touched guides.

8. The “lowest price online”. Bottom-line bait is usually a trap—real sourcing means fewer middle layers, not impossible prices. Disarm: compare same material, same craftsmanship.

The two hard rules that beat memorizing traps

Contract with five locked clauses: exact materials (write “top-grain cowhide” or “solid wood frame”, not vague “genuine leather”/“solid wood”); showroom photo plus model number attached; dimensions with tolerance; lead time with late-delivery penalty; final payment only after on-arrival inspection.

Deposits in three steps: no more than 30% down, up to 70% before shipment, balance after inspection—all to corporate accounts or escrow platforms. Any demand for full payment to a personal WeChat is a block-and-run signal.

How to identify a real factory in ten seconds

Look at the workshop floor: cutting scraps, stitching stations, half-finished pieces. If it is spotless like a showroom with no production trace, it is a reseller in disguise—turn around and leave.

Common questions

What is the most common trap in Foshan furniture buying?

A/B goods: the showroom sample differs from what is delivered. Disarm it with photos, model numbers in the contract, and pre-shipment video inspection.

How should I pay the deposit safely?

Corporate account or escrow only, in three steps: ≤30% down, up to 70% before shipment, balance after inspection. Never pay a personal account in full.

How do I tell real leather from faux in the showroom?

Press the surface: top-grain hide shows fine irregular creases; bonded leather shows a uniform grid or no crease. Also check the cross-section pores and smell.

Is the lowest online quote trustworthy?

Almost never. Extremely low prices usually mean swapped materials or a kickback structure. Compare only same material and same craftsmanship.
