Sleep & comfort
“The firmer the better for your spine” is a myth. Firmness follows weight and sleeping position; the constant is a straight spine.
Treating “hard” as spine protection. A too-hard mattress leaves shoulders and hips suspended and the lower back collapsing; a too-soft one swallows you whole and bends the spine.
Lighter sleepers (under 50 kg) need a slightly softer top to contour shoulders and hips; heavier sleepers (over 80 kg) need stronger support—pocket springs with high-support foam—or they will sleep in a dent.
Side sleepers need give at shoulders and hips—a softer comfort layer. Back sleepers need lumbar support—a firmer core. Stomach sleepers need overall firmness to avoid neck hyperextension.
Individually pocketed springs are quiet and motion-isolating; latex and memory foam contour well; coir (coconut fiber) is firm—mind the adhesive's formaldehyde grade if you choose it.
Our first sentence when a client tries a mattress: “Take off your shoes and lie down for a minute—do not press with your hand.” Correct means no gap under the lower back and no suspended shoulders.
