Solid wood vs veneer: four checks that never lie

Do not read the tag. Read the wood.

Check the end grain

Real solid wood: the grain on the face continues into the side cross-section—they match. Veneer (laminated board): the face is a wood skin over MDF or particleboard, and the grain breaks at the edge banding. One look tells you.

Check edges and joints

Veneered furniture often shows glue lines or exposed substrate at the edge banding. Real solid wood uses joinery or full-thickness boards—you will not see man-made board cross-sections.

Weight and sound

At the same size, solid wood is noticeably heavier. Knock with a knuckle: solid wood answers crisp with rebound; board sounds dull.

Check the price

A “full solid wood” sofa for two or three thousand RMB is veneer or a wood-frame-plus-board build. Real full solid wood (black walnut, ash) carries its cost—too low means fake.

Wood-frame-plus-board is not solid wood

If only the load-bearing frame is wood and the panels are board, it is not “all solid wood”. Before buying, have the contract name the main and secondary materials explicitly—signing directly at the source factory is the safest path.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to tell solid wood from veneer?

Check whether the grain continues from the face into the side cross-section, and whether edge banding exposes substrate. Grain that breaks at the edge means veneer.

Does wood-frame-plus-board count as solid wood?

No. Only the frame being wood with board panels is not full solid wood—the contract must state main and secondary materials.

At what price should I be suspicious of “solid wood”?

Anything far below the real cost—for example a “full solid wood” sofa at two to three thousand RMB—is almost certainly veneer or mixed construction.

Can I ask the factory to write materials into the contract?

Yes, and you should. Exact materials in black and white is the only reliable protection.
