Material guide
“Sinks in the middle, curls at the edges after two years”—the root cause is filling and frame, not the leather.
Seat foam density should be ≥ 45 kg/m³ (high resilience). Below 35 it feels soft at first and collapses within months. Back cushions may be softer; seat cushions must be firm.
Some sellers bulk up low-density foam with thick fabric to hold the shape—the truth appears three months after delivery.
Solid wood frames (pine, birch) outperform nailed multi-layer board. Reach into the gap between seat and backrest and feel down: a row of hard metal strips means serpentine springs; only elastic webbing means a cost-cutting build that will sag.
Higher-end sets use high-resilience foam plus a down or latex layer—good rebound, hard to flatten. Pure low-density foam or recycled cotton is cheap but short-lived.
Press the center of the seat hard: it should rebound within 3 seconds with no permanent dent. Flip the sofa and check the bottom board—thin black non-woven fabric weathers away in about two years.
A top-grain cowhide sofa set leaves the factory at about RMB 6,800 while showrooms sticker it above RMB 15,000—the difference sits in foam, frame and leather, visible to the eye.

Aim for ≥45 kg/m³ high-resilience foam; below 35 kg/m³ it sags quickly.
Feel inside the seat-back gap for serpentine springs plus a solid wood frame—elastic webbing alone means cost cutting.
High-resilience foam plus down or latex feels great and resists flattening, but costs more and needs moisture care.
